I realised as I was writing the first post on this blog that I said nothing about Toshiba laptop computers. It's strange as I think about it now. I was writing about Acer, Dell and Apple and kept thinking to myself, 'I should mention Toshiba laptops'. I don't know why I didn't. See I used to work for an accounting firm (I won't mention which one) that wouldn't consider anything besides Toshiba. I still to this day don't understand why. Not that I'm saying there's anything inherently wrong with Toshiba laptop computers. They are a good machine. It's just that as the IT Manager it was very frustrating for me dealing with the business management to have to accept that I had no influence whatsoever when it came to choice of machine.
I say I don't know to this day why they wouldn't buy any kind of laptop computer except Toshiba, but I do know in a sense. The Toshiba laptop is an excellent machine and the Toshiba company in particular is very savvy when it comes to dealing with large corporations (and this was a very large firm). In my opinion (and this is what this blog is about so if you don't like it...) there are many better laptop computers than the Toshiba, but few better companies. The Toshiba company is the McDonalds of computers. It certainly doesn't make the best product, but it's marketing is top notch.
What the Toshiba company is able to offer to large companies is almost unrivaled in the computer industry. This often has to do with the fact that Toshiba can offer companies a variety of office technology besides computers. In particular Toshiba is able to bundle their computing and photocopying/phone/fax supplies together creating fantastic economies of scale for companies with large office technology expenses. So, buy 1000 laptops every 3 years and bundle that with 200 photocopiers, 500 fax machines, 2000 phones and you're starting to be able to see how the company can offer fantastic discounts on it's laptop computers (and the rest!)
It's great business and when you consider the cost savings you can obtain by buying Toshiba laptop computers as a corporation it's hard to go past it and it's impossible to change the brand if you're in the IT Department because the firm would lose its discounts on all their other machines.
